The Layers |
A Tour Through the Landscape

MVRDV’s pavilion for Expo 2000 was meant as future speculation and laboratory for the Netherlands as a country that has continuously redesigned itself by retrieving the land from the sea. It explored new possible relationships between technology and nature that would take place in a vertical dimension and their literal and metaphorical meanings.

A visit to this laboratory was a strictly choreographed expedition starting at the roof and gradually descending back to the ground. It was meant to be experienced and unpacked step by step going through the topically organized layers of water, forest, underground root-layer represented by the pots, industrial agricultural landscape represented by the flowers, and the dunes.

In this tour, we invite you to follow the same path the visitors of the pavilion took back then.
