Redeveloping the Mill House

Over time, the Mill House underwent redevelopment, with the property being divided multiple times and extensions added to accommodate different family members. This efficient utilization of space reflects a larger trend in Leiden during the late sixteenth century. The city experienced a significant economic boom, leading to immense demographic pressure. As a result, the city expanded three times throughout the seventeenth century. The population surged from approximately 8,000 individuals in 1575 to around 60,000 by 1660.
