THE 1928 MINE DISASTER IN THE STATE MINE HENDRIK

On Friday 13 July 1928, a mining disaster occurred at the Hendrik State Mine in Brunssum. It was caused by a broken mine lamp that came into contact with explosive mine gas. Thirteen miners lost their lives in this disaster.

According to the report by the State Supervision of Mines and State Mines, the explosion was caused by the petrol lamp of a coal driller. The lamp with the damaged mesh caps, was discovered when the mine was later cleared.

The defect gauze in the lamp that was later found where the explosion occurred, allowed mine gas through which extinguished the flame of the lamp.
