In the case of a leaking or defective lamp, the miner had to hand it in to the lamp men in the lamp room. In the time between collection and issue, the lamps were refilled, checked and repaired if necessary, so that they were ready for the next shift. Some lamps were also cleaned, such as the petrol lamps. The glass was polished to remove the soot caused by the flame. The brass petrol lamps, reserved for supervisory staff, also served as a status symbol. These were polished with a polishing machine. Attachable helmet lamps and pot lamps were not polished.
