The Onze Lieve Vrouweplein is one of the oldest places in Maastricht. Although today it is a beautiful and busy square with terraces, for centuries before it was a cemetery of two churches. And before that, it was a fringe area of the Roman and early medieval settlement. Many streets therefore start at this place, some ran to the west, out of the city, and others led to the Meuse River. The old Roman main road ran along the north side of today's square. The names of the ten surrounding streets tell much about the city's history.
