Intro
The World Expo 2000 in Hannover was the first world exhibition to be held in the 21st Century and the very first to ever be held in Germany. The main theme of Expo 2000 was sustainable development and bridging the gap between nature and culture. Most of the pavilions at the Expo reflected on the relationship between nature and culture and The Netherlands’ pavilion designed by architectural firm MVRDV was no exception. Six stacked stereotypical ‘Dutch’ landscapes formed the building’s structure. This architectural experiment sought to showcase the possibilities of utilizing space as population density increases as well as exploring the concept of ‘new nature’: a mix of technology and the natural. This 3D edition utilizes the 3D model made by MVRDV and other born-digital archival material to detail their vision of sustainable architecture.

One of the first official images MVRDV created for the pavilion became so powerful that it became defining for the way the building looked in the end. Despite the fact that many design changes were explored and proposed, all of the ones that changes the composition of the layers and the outer appearance of the building fell through.

The Netherlands is a densely populated country combining a high standard of welfare with a great democratic tradition. It could well be the prime example of a country that has always had to (and knows how to) mold the environment to suit its will. It’s a country that time and time again has won more land from the sea. Perhaps in the near future extra space will be found not just by increasing the country’s width but by expanding vertically. This kind of operation would seem to be applicable to many more countries. It raises questions of global significance.
Can increasing population densities coexist with an increase in the quality of life? What conditions should be satisfied before such increases in density take place? What role will nature, in the widest sense, play in such an increase in density? Is not the issue here “new nature,” literally and metaphorically?

“The architect did not really want columns in the forest, just nature. This would pose a problem with the building part above the forest. This is why the “milk maid” principle was suggested. In the way Dutch milkmaids would transport two buckets of milk using a yoke on their shoulders, the building would be supported on a central point in the centre. In such a situation, stability is gained by tightening a firm cable in the four corners. In the same fashion, the oyster layer was also stabilized.”

“We decided to opt for the most primitive column: the tree trunk. Exploratory calculations showed that we had to choose 14 pieces of 12-metre trunks with an average diameter of 800mm to work safely. The choice was made for the Dutch type of wood, oak. Basically, the stability problems in this layer were solved by opting for placing the trees at an angle, so that horizontal forces could be dispersed by trestle working.”

The World Expo 2000 in Hannover was the first world exhibition to be held in the 21st Century and the very first to ever be held in Germany. The world exhibition as a phenomenon started in the 19th century as an attempt to exhibit technical innovation and to develop and spread these new ideas into the culture of the period. Over the next century other mediums have gradually taken over the role that the world exhibition once fulfilled and so in order to breathe new life into the outdated phenomenon the Expo 2000 in Hannover was created.
