Intro

This edition is about the so-called petrol lamp, it’s advantages and the danger it posed. In 1882, the German manufacturer Carl Wolf developed the first petrol lamp with an integrated igniter and magnetic lock. Compared to the existing mining lamps, that used to burn oil, the petrol lamp had several advantages, which made this lamp burn cleaner, brighter and safer.

Het reservoir is gevuld met katoenen watten, die benzine opnemen. Voor een vulling waren ongeveer 35 ml benzine nodig. De gemiddelde brandduur was circa 10 uur (een dienst duurde 8 uur). De brandduur was afhankelijk van de vlamhoogte: Hoe hoger de vlam, hoe meer benzine de lamp verbruikte, hoe sneller de benzine op was. Een lamp ging maximaal 10-15 jaar mee. Door het gebruik, poetsen en polijsten van de lamp sleet de pot en de dikte van het metaal werd minder.

The end of the cotton wick ends in the petrol vessel, where the soaked cotton wool is. Depending on the lamp, different types of wick are used. They were round, flat and had different diameters and widths.

After World War II, the Friemann & Wolf factory moved from Zwickau to Duisburg. The lamps which were manufactured in Duisburg were made of thicker rods and no longer had a serial number. The lamps produced in Zwickau did have a serial number.

Made of iron. The lid serves to strengthen the construction and to protect the flame of the lamp. Often the miners personal number was also applied to it. In the early years, the lids of the petrol lamps were fairly flat and upright. Later they started to make a bulge in the lamp covers, as can be clearly seen in this lamp (model 300, Friemann & Wolf). This is why the ‘wirbel’ in front of the hook hangs higher above the mesh cover. Het deksel dient ter versterking van de constructie en ter bescherming van de vlam. After a major mining disaster in 1928, these lamps were abolished in the Netherlands and lamps with two gauze baskets were used as this was safer. If one of the mesh baskets became damaged, the flame was protected by the second mesh basket. This way the flame never came into direct contact with the outside air.
